Dr. Sara McCarthy - ‘E-scooters Bite Back’
This presentation explores the rise and wide spread distribution of e-scooters in New Zealand since their debut in 2018. The focus of this presentation is to investigate e-scooter related dental injuries in Wellington and throughout New Zealand.
These specific injuries not only strain our health care system, but they also have long-term implications on our patients lives. The presentation underscores the importance for dental health professionals to actively educate patients about the potential risks associated with e-scooter usage.
Dr. Te Rauhina Jackson - ‘Tooth for a Tooth - An Alternative Method of Alveolar Cleft Bone Grafting’
My presentation will go through cleft in New Zealand and specifically focus on the alveolar cleft bone grafting procedure. This surgery has significant donor site morbidity with the iliac crest being the gold standard harvest site. We will discuss how outcomes of alveolar cleft bone grafts are assessed using 2D imaging vs 3D imaging. I will then introduce an alternative alveolar cleft bone graft method and present two cases at the Hutt Hospital that use this technique. This alternative method aims to provide a stable graft for implant placement and decrease donor site morbidity with less post-operative pain.
Dr. Jamie Preston - Swellings: ‘Straining our System’
I will be presenting my research titled; Swellings: Straining our System. During my first six months working on call as a house surgeon, I was surprised by the high proportion of acute of presentations as a result of odontogenic infection. With the data available to me, I aimed to characterise afterhours facial swelling presentations to the Capital and Coast Hospital Dental Department from 2021 to 2023. I investigated general characteristics; the number of facial swellings presenting, and whether there were inequities present. In doing so, I hoped to provide some insight into the current state of oral health in our region, and help guide future policy, and service development
