Dr. Joanna Ngo
Special Needs Dentistry:
My name is Dr Joanna Ngo and I am a specialist in Special Needs Dentistry (SND). I completed my BDS in Singapore 2008 and worked in hospitals where my interest in managing people with medical complexities and disabilities began. This led me to pursue my DClinDent (SND) in Otago 2014. I have since had clinical and research experience working in hospital settings in both Singapore and New Zealand. More recently, I have also gained some private clinic experience in Tairāwhiti.
I would like to take this chance to explain what Special Needs Dentistry is with clinical examples. In my talk I will draw on my hospital experience to show the complexity of the nature of hospital work. There will also be some examples of cases that have been managed in private practice and sharing of some tips to manage people with medical complexities (eg. Oncology, Bleeding risks, Dementia) and intellectual disabilities. The aim is to allow dental colleagues to realise that we are all 'Special Needs Dentists' to some extent and to continue to encourage the ongoing joint-care of this patient group in their local practice.
